A swimmer's eye view of Barcelona

Our last post featured the temporary "beaches" of Paris Plages, which bring a taste of the seashore to the Seine and other locations each summer. In Barcelona one simply needs to stroll or take a Metro ride to one of several stops that are within a few blocks of the seafront, where a string of manmade beaches offers a variety of experiences, from au naturel to family fun. Here's one Australian's take on swimming along the shoreline: http://tinyurl.com/43gsofs (And who better than an Aussie to comment on swimming and beaches?)

Hanging out at Barceloneta
Personally, I find the beaches themselves pretty sterile, as they were created for the 1992 Olympics. But the last time we swam there in late September, the water was clean and warm. And the beaches are kept clean, helped by prodding like this:

Barceloneta is a fun place to spend an evening. You can enjoy paella at restaurants like Can Majo or Cava Mar, which we prefer. Nothing is actually "beachfront" here but you'll encounter a couple of beach bars on a stroll up the very pleasant promenade to Port Olimpic, where you can view Frank Gehry's gigantic golden fish sculpture. Once there you can splurge at one of the five restaurants at the Hotel Arts, a favorite with Michael Douglas and other visiting celebs.

We don't list any apartments right in Barceloneta, which is a big draw for hard partyers. But we have several apartments in El Born, which is not far away, and some in Poble Nou, a more typical residential area just off the beaches. Here's a photo of an oversized studio located between Passeig del Born and the seafront.
