Eagerly approaching liftoff

John Nicholls gives it a go as Lady Celine looks on.

It's only two weeks until we head off for this year's business/pleasure trip and we can hardly wait. The itinerary is reversed this time - we're starting in Paris and ending in Barcelona, with stops in Burgundy, Geneva and Provence along the way. This should assure us of comfortable weather throughout; last year we ended in Paris during early October and caught a couple of chilly, sunless days.

Those are our hosts in Burgundy above, Lady Celine and John Nicholls, during a stirring game of boules played last year under a full moon in the courtyard of their chambre d'hote, www.domainedesangespuligny.com. This incredibly charming bed and breakfast in a gorgeous winemakers village is eclipsed only by their hospitality.

You may have noticed a spate of stories about the newfound popularity of boules, or petanque. We found it first!

In a recent post I wrote about the virtues of early booking. Unlike hotels, at least brand-name ones, apartments are reserved only with a deposit and planning ahead pays dividends in selection. That notion was reinforced this week when a party of three asked for an apartment in Barcelona 14-21 September. We have two owners who between them have 30 apartments and all were fully booked. Fortunately another owner had a couple of availabilities and we were able to put them in a very nice apartment, although not in their first choice of location. Here's a photo:
