Beautiful, bewitching Barcelona

Last year we stumbled on the incredible La Mercè festival and this year we are lucky to be back again. The photo above was taken on our way into Friday night's Opera Flamenco performance at the Palau de la Musica Catalana. It was a fascinating blend of music, spectacular dancing and singing that wove the story of two ill-fated young dancers. Outside, giant figures paraded the streets and drummers beat out compelling rhythms. Music and dance fill stages throughout the city over several days.

We've moved to this apartment, which is managed by an interior designer. It's a very spacious studio in the "edgy" El Raval district, which we found filled with people but well-lit and not at all insecure at 11 p.m. Both our greeter and the designer/manager said this is not one of his nicer apartments, but to us it's very well-appointed and equipped.

Here's a denizen of the district, a huge sculpture that attracts young fans who ride its back or in this case skate under its belly. There was a wonderful outdoor craft show taking place here on the Rambla del Raval, and vendors selling handmade earrings attracted Charlotte's attention and some of her cash.

Finally, here for your amusement is a sign in the subway warning of 180 euro fines for relieving yourself in public places. It may not be the signs, but something seems to be working; the city is very clean as residents seem to dispose of trash in the abundant receptacles. Even the waterfront was nearly spotless, despite the presence of numerous picnickers and skater boys.

Later today we will view two apartments that I'm excited about. Both are large and near but not on Las Ramblas, so they should satisfy travelers wanting to be near the action but not disturbed by it.
